BLURB:
Such wonderful children. Such a beautiful mother. Such a lovely house. Such endless terror!

It wasn't that she didn't love her children. She did. But there was a fortune at stake--a fortune that would assure their later happiness if she could keep the children a secret from her dying father.

So she and her mother hid her darlings away in an unused attic.

Just for a little while...

EXPECTATIONS: I came upon a movie once, when I was going through my old movie list. And it was awesome! And when I figured out there were book series it was even more awesome! So I finally got around to reading it and I have to say....it did not disappoint!

THE WORLD: The plot is set in roughly 1960's. So the entire feeling of the book is just like that. The clothes, the language the terms. I did enjoy it a lot! I like period books, well period anything! But the book did a good job setting the tone. I totally visualized 1960's entire time listening to this book.

CHARACTERS: The plot circles around the Dollanganger family. Parents Christopher and Corine, and their 4 kids: Chris, Cathy, Carrie and Cory. The entire family did give this weird creepy vibe from the beginning honestly. They were painted as this perfect ideal family. Beautiful people who had even more beautiful kids, they're so nice and love each other and everything is just so perfect you think they're like psychopaths :D

That last until the father Christopher dies and Corine, the mother has to take over as the head of the family. So Corine is good for nothing and soon the family is covered in bills that they run away to Corine's parents, who are very rich. But Corine has a secret and her mother Olivia, has one condition for them to live with her - that the kids would be kept in the attic. I have to say, I hated Corine so much, I wanted to punch someone every time she opened her mouth.  That woman was nothing more but a beautiful shell. A beautiful shell, who likes to be pampered and  loves herself so much, that leaving her kids and locking them up in an attic for years means nothing to her! The father Christopher, was a nice character though.

Carry and Cory are still very very little when the book starts so they were annoying at times but it's understandable since they're kids. I liked Chris the oldest kid a lot, and Cathy too. They had to grow up from kids with big dreams to adults who had to do everything to survive.

I  had mixed feelings about Olivia, the mother of Corine, she was just a horrible person, but from time to time there would be these moments of kindness, where she felt sorry that the kids had to live in the attic.

ROMANCE: I have to completely honest with you guys, this book has some trigger themes. One of them being neglect of children the other - incest. As Chris and Cathy become teenagers and young adults, they start having these feelings and being curious and they have no one to explore the feelings with but each other, so if this is something you cannot deal with, then do not read this book. I have to admit, it was gross for me at the beginning, but I did understand it. It was written very well.

GOOD: The idea of the book. A mother who locked her kids in the attic to basically start her life over sounds very great. I liked that everything was explained in this one. Every secret, every little something that someone hid was explained and I fully understood all the story with no plot holes.

BAD: Unfortunately, there was one incident in this book that I was NOT OK with, personally for me, the book could have done without it. It seemed unnecessary for me.

OVERALL: I did enjoy this book quite a bit and I would recommend this for every one.
